A downloadable game for Windows

The original Night Stalker Intellivision game was created by programmer Steve Montero, artist Peter Allen and sound designer Russ Lieblich in 1982.  Like many fans of this incredible game, the developers of Night Stalker DX have always been fond of the minimalistic pulse of music that accompanies the robots and the unique behaviors of each of the enemies.  Our reinterpretation of the original game is an amateur tribute that takes in many of these original elements and expands on them in a way that adds to the game's complexity while adding new quality of life improvements.  In the spirit of Steve Montero's background in robotics, our project offers a chance to experiment with the structure of the original game and create new and compelling AI behaviors to assign to the enemy characters.

In order to play this recreated version of the game, you'll need an X-Box compatible controller and a Windows 7+ PC. Note that during the game you can use the D-Pad to move your player, but it's suggested that you use the left joystick since there's less of a chance to create errors.  Night Stalker DX was developed using Gamemaker Studio 2 and the developer would like to continue to make progress on it with the assistance of potential collaborators (programmers, pixel artists and musicians) and other fans of the original game.  Be sure to leave your feedback in the comments below.

Here are a few choice quotes from reviewers of various builds of the game:

Highretrogamelord: "I tested your game and it was really fun and addictive. ...Speaking of robots, I love how the effect when you destroy them looks so "in your face" now."

Retro[Heart]GIFMonster: "So I got a chance to play it, that was quite impressive! The graphics are crisp and clean, and very faithful to the original, and the controls are great - though almost too fluid, (as you can pretty easily dodge bullets in the halls by moving left and right, that's not necessarily a bad thing, just different)  I thought it was a bit easy at first - then I lost my gun and got stomped pretty quick trying to get it back about 5 mins in when things were moving faster."

DrSlop: "...I finally had a minute to play your remake of Nightstalker. How awesome! I think if I remember the original you had somewhat more ponderous movement speed, but other than that it was really faithful. I lost like in hour playing it this evening!"

RetroAnalyst Prime "It's good! I think the updated graphics are consistent with the mood of the original game...I like that the enemies interact with each other and can get caught in their own line of fire, makes the game feel more immersive...overall, if your goal was to update the original to slicker controls and graphics, I think you're most of the way there".
