Night Stalker DX
A downloadable game for Windows
Night Stalker DX is a fan-made tribute to the 1982 Intellivision classic, originally created by Steve Montero, Peter Allen, and Russ Lieblich. Like many fans, we’ve always appreciated the minimalistic music and the unique enemy behaviors in the original. Our reinterpretation builds on these elements, enhancing the game’s complexity while incorporating quality-of-life improvements. Inspired by Montero’s background in robotics, we’ve also introduced new AI behaviors for the enemies.
Please note that we do not own the intellectual property for the original Night Stalker game. This is a fan-made project created for non-commercial purposes, and we are not charging for it. All rights to the original game belong to the respective copyright holders, and this project is a tribute to their work. We respect the original creators and are committed to supporting the preservation of their legacy.
To play, you’ll need a Windows 7+ PC and an Xbox-compatible controller. While the D-Pad is usable, we recommend the left joystick for smoother controls. Developed in Gamemaker Studio 2, Night Stalker DX is a work-in-progress, and we’re looking for collaborators (programmers, pixel artists, musicians) to help continue development. We welcome your feedback in the comments below.
Here are a few choice quotes from reviewers of various builds of the game:
Highretrogamelord: "I tested your game and it was really fun and addictive. ...Speaking of robots, I love how the effect when you destroy them looks so "in your face" now."
Retro[Heart]GIFMonster: "So I got a chance to play it, that was quite impressive! The graphics are crisp and clean, and very faithful to the original, and the controls are great - though almost too fluid, (as you can pretty easily dodge bullets in the halls by moving left and right, that's not necessarily a bad thing, just different) I thought it was a bit easy at first - then I lost my gun and got stomped pretty quick trying to get it back about 5 mins in when things were moving faster."
DrSlop: "...I finally had a minute to play your remake of Nightstalker. How awesome! I think if I remember the original you had somewhat more ponderous movement speed, but other than that it was really faithful. I lost like in hour playing it this evening!"
RetroAnalyst Prime "It's good! I think the updated graphics are consistent with the mood of the original game...I like that the enemies interact with each other and can get caught in their own line of fire, makes the game feel more immersive...overall, if your goal was to update the original to slicker controls and graphics, I think you're most of the way there".
